You are required to take the credit counseling course within 180 days of before your bankruptcy is filed.
This credit counseling course is critical and required regardless if you file chapter 7 or chapter 13 bankruptcy. Since the new bankruptcy laws of 2005, there have been many bankruptcy cases that were dismissed because of failure to file the credit counseling course on time. 
Bankruptcy judges very rarely waive the credit counseling requirement or extend time to complete it. Your credit counseling course must be completed before your bankruptcy petition is filed.
The credit counseling course can be completed over the phone, in person, or through the internet. may be completed in person, over the telephone or via the Internet. Once you have finished the course you must include the completion certificate in the bankruptcy petition.
